# Embroidery-only vs sewing and embroidery combo: which should you buy?
Updated October 7, 2026 By [EmbroideryWise Editorial Team](https://embroiderywise.com/about/) [How we research](https://embroiderywise.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- Decide the field size first (4 × 4, 5 × 7 or 6 × 10); sewing features never enlarge the embroidery area.
- Already sew on a machine you like? Embroidery-only. Starting from nothing and want to sew? Combo.
- Two machines let you sew while a design stitches; a combo does one job at a time.
- Brother sells matched pairs: PE545/SE700 (4 × 4), PE900/SE2000 (5 × 7), NQ1700E/NQ3550W (6 × 10).
- At 5 × 7, the PE900 and SE2000 embroidery specs are identical.

Buy an embroidery-only machine if you already own a sewing machine you like, or only plan to decorate ready-made items; you can sew and embroider at the same time. Buy a combo if it will be your first and only machine and you want to sew too. Either way, choose the embroidery field size first: in Brother’s current line, the 5 × 7 PE900 and SE2000 have identical embroidery specs, so a combo adds sewing, not bigger embroidery.
The choice between an embroidery-only machine and a sewing and embroidery combo looks like a features question. It is really a workflow question. Do you already sew? Do you want to sew and embroider in the same session? And how big are the designs you want to make?

This guide gives you a decision framework, then shows Brother’s matched pairs at each hoop size so you can see exactly what the combo adds and what it does not. Specs come from the makers’ product pages and manuals, checked October 7, 2026. EmbroideryWise is research-based; we did not test these machines.

## What each type actually is

An embroidery-only machine has a permanent embroidery arm that moves a hoop under the needle. It stitches designs, lettering and in-the-hoop projects. It cannot sew a seam, hem or buttonhole.

A combo is a sewing machine with a detachable embroidery unit. With the unit off, it sews like a regular computerized machine. With the unit attached, it embroiders. It does one job at a time.

Neither type is better at embroidery by default. What matters is the specific model’s field, speed and features. For a broader primer, see [embroidery machine vs sewing machine](https://embroiderywise.com/posts/embroidery-machine-vs-sewing-machine/).

## The decision framework

Work through these five questions in order. The first two decide most cases.

### 1. How big are the designs you want to make?

Pick the field before anything else. The field is the largest area the machine can stitch in one hooping, and sewing features never increase it.

- **4 × 4 (100 × 100 mm):** monograms, names, small motifs, patches.

- **5 × 7 (130 × 180 mm):** T-shirt fronts, totes, most design-shop sizes. It has 2.34 times the area of 4 × 4.

- **6 × 10 (160 × 260 mm):** larger quilt blocks, bigger front designs, long lettering.

Collect five designs you want to stitch and check them in the [hoop fit checker](https://embroiderywise.com/tools/hoop-fit/). Our [4 × 4 vs 5 × 7 guide](https://embroiderywise.com/posts/4x4-vs-5x7-embroidery-hoop/) explains the size classes in detail.

### 2. Do you already own a sewing machine you like?

- **Yes:** an embroidery-only machine is usually the better buy. You keep your sewing setup and add embroidery without paying for duplicate sewing features.

- **No, and you want to sew:** a combo is the simplest single purchase.

- **No, and you only want to decorate ready-made items:** embroidery-only. You will not use the sewing side.

### 3. Will you want to sew and embroider at the same time?

A single-needle embroidery machine can take a while to finish a design, especially with several color changes. With two machines, you can sew the next project while the embroidery machine runs. With a combo, you wait, or you remove the embroidery unit and lose your place in the workflow.

If you mostly sew one week and embroider the next, this barely matters. If you make embroidered garments or quilts regularly, it matters a lot.

### 4. How much space do you have?

One combo takes one footprint. Two machines take two. If you work on a small table you clear after each session, a combo is easier to live with.

### 5. What happens if a machine needs service?

With two machines, a repair takes away one capability, not both. With a combo, a trip to the service center stops sewing and embroidery together. That is a small factor for hobbyists, but worth weighing if you plan to sell.

## Brother’s matched pairs, side by side

Brother makes an embroidery-only and a combo version at each common field size, which makes the trade-off easy to see.

| Field | Embroidery-only | Combo | What the combo adds | What the embroidery-only model has that the combo does not |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 4 × 4 (100 × 100 mm) | PE545 | SE700 (or the USB-only SE630) | 103 sewing stitches, 710 spm sewing, 8 feet, 10 buttonhole styles | Larger 3.7” screen (SE700: 3.2 × 1.8”) |
| 5 × 7 (130 × 180 mm) | PE900 | SE2000 | 241 sewing stitches, 850 spm sewing, 8 feet, 10 buttonhole styles | Brother lists color sort on the PE900; embroidery specs otherwise identical |
| 6 × 10 (160 × 260 mm) | NQ1700E | NQ3550W | 291 sewing stitches, sewing up to 850 spm | 4.85” screen vs 3.67”; 5 × 7 frame listed as included |

### 4 × 4 pair: PE545 vs SE700

| Spec | PE545 (embroidery-only) | SE700 (combo) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Field | 100 × 100 mm | 100 × 100 mm |
| Designs / fonts | 135 / 10 | 135 / 10 |
| Embroidery speed | 400 spm | 400 spm (manual) |
| Sewing stitches | None | 103 |
| Screen | 3.7” | 3.2 × 1.8” |
| Transfer | USB, Wi-Fi, Artspira | USB, Wi-Fi, Artspira |

Embroidery is effectively the same. The SE630 is the simpler combo option with the same 4 × 4 field and 103 stitches, but USB only and 80 built-in designs.

### 5 × 7 pair: PE900 vs SE2000

Brother lists the same field, 193 designs, 13 fonts, 650 spm, Wi-Fi, Artspira and jump stitch trimming for both. The SE2000 adds the sewing side. Our [PE900 vs SE2000 comparison](https://embroiderywise.com/posts/brother-pe900-vs-se2000/) breaks it down line by line.

### 6 × 10 pair: NQ1700E vs NQ3550W

Both list a 6 × 10 field, 258 designs, 13 fonts and 850 spm embroidery with Wi-Fi and Artspira. The NQ3550W adds 291 sewing stitches. The NQ1700E has the larger 4.85” screen (vs 3.67”) and Brother lists both 6 × 10 and 5 × 7 frames for it; the NQ3550W’s included hoop list comes from a shared Brother accessories document, so confirm it with the seller.

### Other brands follow the same pattern

bernette sells the 70 DECO (embroidery-only) and the bernette 79 (combo) with the same 260 × 160 mm field, 208 designs and 7 fonts; the 79 adds 500 sewing stitches and sewing up to 1,000 spm. Janome’s Memory Craft 9850 is a combo with a 170 × 200 mm field and 200 sewing stitches, alongside the embroidery-only MC400E. See [Brother vs Janome](https://embroiderywise.com/posts/brother-vs-janome-embroidery-machine/).

## Who should buy which: scenarios

| Your situation | Buy | Example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You sew on a machine you like and want 5 × 7 embroidery | Embroidery-only | PE900 |
| No machine yet, want to sew clothes and embroider them | Combo | SE2000 |
| You only want to monogram towels, shirts and bags you buy | Embroidery-only | PE900, or PE545 for small designs |
| You quilt and want embroidered blocks | Embroidery-only beside your quilting machine, or a 6 × 10 combo | NQ1700E or NQ3550W |
| Small space, occasional sewing, small embroidery | Combo | SE700 or SE630 |
| You plan to sell embroidered items | Embroidery-only (and later multi-needle) | PE900 or NQ1700E |
| You do lots of in-the-hoop projects | Either | Most of the work happens in the hoop, per Kimberbell |

## A 60-second checklist

Answer yes or no:

- I already own a sewing machine I plan to keep.

- I mostly want to decorate items I buy ready-made.

- I want to sew garments, bags or quilts and embroider them.

- I want to sew and embroider in the same session.

- I have room for two machines.

Mostly yes to 1, 2 or 4: buy embroidery-only. Yes to 3 but no to 1 and 5: buy a combo. Yes to 3 and 4 and you have room: an embroidery-only machine plus a sewing machine is the more flexible setup, even if it means buying a sewing machine separately.

## What living with a combo looks like

A combo changes your routine more than the spec sheet suggests. To embroider, you attach the embroidery unit, swap to the embroidery foot and clear space behind and beside the machine for the arm to travel. To go back to sewing, you reverse those steps. None of it is hard, but it is a reason some combo owners batch their embroidery into dedicated sessions.

The upside is that everything lives in one place, you learn one interface, and you maintain one machine. For many beginners who sew and embroider in separate sessions, that simplicity outweighs the mode switching.

## Common myths

“A combo gives you more embroidery.” No. At 5 × 7, Brother’s PE900 and SE2000 have identical embroidery specs. A combo adds sewing, not field.

“Embroidery-only machines stitch better.” Not by category. Compare the specs of the actual models.

“I’ll start with a 4 × 4 combo and upgrade the hoop later.” A larger accessory hoop does not expand a machine’s field. Upgrading the field means buying a different machine.

“A combo is always the budget option.” Not necessarily. If you already own a sewing machine, buying a combo means paying for sewing features twice. Compare current prices for the specific pair you are considering.

## Where multi-needle machines fit

All multi-needle machines are embroidery-only. Brother’s PR680W, for example, has six needles that change colors automatically, an 8 × 12 field and cap frame capability. That is a business purchase rather than a beginner one. See [single-needle vs multi-needle](https://embroiderywise.com/posts/single-needle-vs-multi-needle-embroidery-machine/) if you are heading that way.

## The bottom line

Choose the field size first. Then ask whether you already sew. If you do, buy embroidery-only and keep your sewing machine. If you do not and want to, buy the combo at the field size you need. In Brother’s current line, that usually means the PE900 or the SE2000.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is an embroidery-only machine better at embroidery than a combo?
Not necessarily. Brother lists identical embroidery specs for the embroidery-only PE900 and the SE2000 combo: same 5 × 7 field, designs, fonts, 650 spm speed and jump stitch trimming. Compare the specific models rather than the category.

### Can an embroidery-only machine sew?
No. An embroidery-only machine stitches designs in a hoop. It cannot sew seams, hems or buttonholes, so you need a separate sewing machine for construction.

### Can you sew and embroider at the same time on a combo?
No. A combo does one job at a time: you attach the embroidery unit to embroider and remove it to sew. Two separate machines are the only way to do both at once.

### Should a complete beginner buy a combo?
If you want to sew as well as embroider and do not own a sewing machine, a combo is the simplest first purchase. If you only want to decorate ready-made items, an embroidery-only machine is the more focused choice.

### Are multi-needle machines combos?
No. Multi-needle machines such as Brother’s 6-needle PR680W are embroidery-only. They are a business-level upgrade, not a combo option.
