Our shortlist

Brother PE545
Best for: Beginners who already own a sewing machine and mainly want monograms, names, patches and small motifs.
- Field4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)
- TypeEmbroidery only
- Built-in designs135
- Max speed400 spm
- TransferUSB, Wi-Fi, Artspira app
Why pick it
- Embroidery-only, so you are not paying for sewing features you may not need
- Wireless transfer and Artspira support, which the PE535 lacked
- 135 built-in designs and 10 fonts cover first projects
Think twice if
- 100 × 100 mm field limits design size
- Max speed of 400 spm is lower than the 5 × 7 models
- Cannot sew seams; you still need a sewing machine

Brother PP1 (Skitch)
Best for: Phone-first crafters who want a compact, app-driven machine for small designs.
- Field4 × 4 in (100 × 100 mm)
- TypeEmbroidery only
- Max speed400 spm
- TransferBluetooth LE, Artspira app (required)
Why pick it
- Compact and app-driven
- Magnetic 4 × 4 frame included
- No computer or USB stick needed
Think twice if
- Artspira app required to operate it
- No screen for on-machine editing
- 4 × 4 field only
The two machines shortlisted here under $500 have 4 × 4 inch fields. That is the main fact to know before comparing anything else. Prices below were checked on Brother’s US site on October 11, 2026 and change often.

The PE545 sits at the limit: $499.99 is under $500 by one cent. If its price rises, it drops out of this bracket.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the PE545 if you want to run the machine from its own screen and keep files on USB or Wi-Fi. It is the safer pick because its price is not a sale price.
Buy the PP1 only if you are comfortable controlling everything from the Artspira app. It has no screen, so a dead phone or app problem stops the work. Its price is lower only while the sale lasts.
What does $500 not buy?
A bigger field. Left-chest logos, monograms, names and patches fit in 4 × 4. T-shirt fronts and tote designs usually do not. The 5 × 7 Brother embroidery-only model compared here, the PE900, was $1,179.99 on the same date. Our 4 × 4 vs 5 × 7 hoop guide shows which projects need the larger field.
The SE630 sewing and embroidery combo showed as out of stock on Brother’s site, so we left it out of the price table.
Is it better to spend more?
If you already own a sewing machine and expect larger designs within a year, yes. Buying a 4 × 4 machine and replacing it is the costliest way to start. Our budget guide covers the used PE800 route and the warranty trade-off.
